My Koala Tattoo | A tribute to Australia

When I was back in Canada, I told myself that I was going to get a koala tattoo at the end of my Australia trip.

And so, I did.

Three weeks ago, I went to Vic Market Tattoo and met with Kane Berry to get my tattoo. I chose to book with Kane because I felt his portfolio matched what I wanted the koala to look like, and it looks like he has done tons of koala tattoos as well.

I already had a maple leaf tattoo (ayeeee, Canada!) and while I do love it, I felt like it was lonely and empty. A few months ago, I thought – hey! Why don’t I make my koala hold the stem of my maple leaf?!

Thank God Kane was able to make that happen! I was worried it wouldn’t work out but he spent about an hour going back and forth with designs to try to make the koala hold the stem. Eventually he did and it looks soooo adorable! I absolutely love it.

I think it took about an hour to finish and the pain wasn’t too bad. If you ever had a tattoo done, the process of wiping excess ink hurts more than the actual tattooing because the paper towel is basically rubbing against an open wound. The shading of the koala started to sting a bit towards the end as well.

I chose to have the maple leaf tattooed because I am proud to be a Canadian. But above all that, it’s a little piece of home I can take with me anywhere in the world. I love travelling (as you can probably tell) and it’s such a comfort to travel thousands of kilometers away from home but still have a piece with you. I thought I would leave Canada and move abroad, but after this experience, I don’t think I can ever leave Canada permanently.

That being said, I chose to have the koala tattooed on me because this is a once in a life time opportunity. It was on my bucket list to be live abroad and I’ve done that. I believe I won’t have an opportunity like this again and I don’t think I can pick up and move across the ocean once I settle down. I can move within Canada but probably not to another country. Australia was home to me for 6 months!

Plus, my maple leaf was lonely.

The end result! Fresh ink, not even healed yet. I love Kane’s idea of colour burst to bring out the koala a bit.

Thanks Australia!

PS: Apologies for the image quality here! I had these photos compressed three weeks ago but wasn’t ready to write this entry yet. I thought everything was okay with the compression as like every other photos I’ve shared but I guess not! I don’t have the original images anymore for me to re-compress and have them in a bigger size.

Introducing my 3rd Tattoo!

Who knows, this might be my last tattoo I’d get!

If you don’t know by now, I’m planning to leave Vancouver in the next two years so. A lot of people may think, “psh, two years is a long way from now!” and if you are one of them, weeeeeell, you gotta look into your life because honey, time is FLYING by way, way, way too fast… seriously, it’s the end of 2014 soon!

So yeah, 2 years may sound long but in reality, it flies by.
After procrastinating long enough, I finally got around to designing my third tattoo – a tribute to my home city.

It’ll be my first coloured tattoo and I’m excited for that. My original plan was to keep it simple – just an umrella with rain drops and YVR’s coordinates. Then I saw a few skyline tattoos and fell in love with it, except that the skyline tattoo would require more skin. I want to keep it simple, small and perhaps on the back of my neck or just below my neck.

Here’s my design(s):

#1-4 is my original concept. I originally wanted it straight up but the diagonal designs add a bit of “umph” to it, just because it’s diagonal, you know what I’m saying?

I also added two versions of it: one simple (4 rain drops) and one with a bit more raindrops (6 drops). I originally liked the concept of 4 raindrops until I experimented with 6 raindrops and loved it even more!

The skyline tattoo is Vancouver’s waterfronts. There’s a bigger one and a smaller cropped one. I enjoy the bigger one but like I said, I don’t have anywhere on my skin to do that unless I put it sideways on my thigh or something – even then I’m not sure if I want a skyline. If I opted for the smaller design, I’d have it on my forearm. However, the skyline designs might even be out of the question because of all the fine details that are pretty small.

Right now, I’m leaning towards design #4 because it’s pretty much what I envisioned prior to designing it. I thought about having the words, Vancouver, BC buuuut coordinates look soooo much better, haha.

Which design do you think is good?

… aaaaaaand, I'm going back to school… with a new tattoo!

Remember how I said that this September was the first September that I’d be working instead of going back to school?

Well… it ain’t happening.

I’m going back to school to get a Bachelor of Human Resources and Labour Relations.
That being said, that means I’m no longer a graduate (from my college) because long story short, due to some “legality” issues, in order to pursue my Bachelor’s, I need to drop out of my college and not get the diploma, but I get the transcript to transfer into my undergraduate program.

It’s a bit upsetting to me, knowing that I spent more than 10k and not getting a diploma in the end because that school can’t sort their shit out. So, essentially, I just spent a lot of money to get a measly transcript, and guess what? The undergraduate program cost about the same for the diploma.

But, you know what? It’s just another bump in the road. I’m pretty sure I can get my undergraduate degree in about 2 years or less, which is still pretty fast compared to everyone else, haha. I’m buckling down to get this shit done with.

On the brighter side, I got a much more flexible schedule than my previous school which means I can work part time during my studies again… how I miss earning my own money!

Meanwhile, on the brighter side, this is what I’ve been spending my money on:

For the longest time, I was hesitant to buying an iPad mini because I already got a Samsung tablet and the sole purpose for the tablet was to read on it. However, I made the decision to switching to an iPad and couldn’t be more happier. My reading experience has improved and so has my entertainment usage. I do wish iBooks had more features… like, how about the basic, sort by last read?? duhh.

Yes, about a month (give or take a few days) since my first tattoo, I impulsively stopped by that tattoo parlor again for my second one! I was supposed to get it done with my friend but she didn’t save up for her tattoo yet, so we’re going back next month… maybe, I’ll get my third? I haven’t gotten anything planned yet so most likely not.

And, can’t forget new university swaaaag πŸ˜‰
